Chernobyl

For another genius hour project I decided to do research on Chernobyl because it just seems interesting

            Where/When was Chernobyl
Reactor 4 of Chernobyl exploded on April 26th, 1986 it happened in northern Ukraine just near the border of Belarus.

How did reactor 4 explode
That night on April 26th there supposed to run a safety test for reactor 4 but the reactor should have been at least been running over 700 plus megawatts to run the the safety test then then the number of megawatts drops to 0 they have to shut down the reactor, but the commander in the control insisted the kept working because they have to do the control test so his plan was to retract the control rods(which help control the reactor if some thing goes wrong thee bring the power down)which brung up the power level back up to 200 which still was not the required 700 megawatts but they still went ahead with the safety test. also the water level(used for cooling the reactor) was dangerously low. but in the reactor the uranium rods were building power/pressure  in the bottom of the core which the sensors don't always detect. Then they started the safety test and that released all the pressure and since the water levels were really low they could not cool the reactor. the pressure was pushing the tops of the reactor the all the uranium rods explode and all the energy explodes which does some damage to the plant then there is a second explosion which was 10 times more powerful Hiroshima and released toxic gas into the atmosphere and blew the safety roof of the reactor. The whole city of Pipyat was evacuated and only 5 people who worked at the plant survived.

The 3 heroic divers of Chernobyl
After Chernobyl there were three divers who had to dive in the radioactive water to drain the water because if the radioactive matreial mixed with water it would react and make a cloud of ash that would spread around the world and cause catastrophic damage but these three guys dived into the radioactive water with 1 flashlight that died out and they had to feel there way around to the valve and they drained the water but the all died from radiation poisoning the next day.

The elephants foot
Image result for the elephants foot
The so called Elephant's Foot is a solid mass made of melted nuclear fuel mixed with lots and lots of concrete, sand, and core sealing material that the fuel had melted through. It is located in a basement area under the original location of the core. This is the most radioactive substance on earth if you would stand beside for 5 minutes you would be dead.
